Raymond Olaf “Shorty” Hertell was born at San Francisco, California July 20, 1943, to Olaf A. and Ellen Helen (Hobakoski) Hertell. He grew up in Minnetonka. He attended and graduated from Hopkins High School.
Raymond entered the United States Army Oct. 1, 1963 and served as a small arms repairman. Part of his service time was spent in Wertheim, Germany. Raymond retired from the military in 2003.
On April 9, 1977 Ray married Dianne Topel at Buffalo, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Cokato; to this union two children Kyle and Nicole were born.
Ray worked many places during his life some of them were: Pako Manufacturing, Honeywell, Roberts Automatic Products and SSDI.
He enjoyed hunting, shooting, fishing; coached 4-H shooting sports, and was a member of the VFW in Hopkins, Wolf Lake and Litchfield, and member of the American Legion in Litchfield. He was a member of the NRA, Disabled Veterans, Rainbow Sportsmans of Cokato and Wolf Lake Sportsman.
Raymond passed away at the Golden Living Center of Delano, MN April 13, 2016. He had reached the age of 72 years, 8 months and 23 days.
Survivors include his wife Dianne of Cokato, son Kyle of Menahga, daughter Nicole of Montrose; grandchildren Paige and Tyler. He is also survived by other relatives and many friends. Ray is preceded in death by his parents.
