She was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota and was transplanted to Virginia due to her husband’s military career. She volunteered at the Navy Relief Society and logged over 2,600 hours of service. She was a Girl Scout in grade school and continued as a leader until her daughters graduated from high school.

Hartman and husband John, all of Chesapeake; three grandchildren, Alexandria N. Hill, Danielle M. Hill, and Garrett N. Hartman; her parents Ed (since deceased) and Helen Turner of Minnetonka, two brothers, George Turner and wife Steph of St. Louis Park, and Robert Turner (since deceased) and wife Kay of Minnetonka.

Some random thoughts from her husband Steve:

We were in the same classroom at Oak Knoll Elementary for a year – Joanne was in first grade and I was in second grade. We started going steady when she was a Junior and I was a Senior.

We’d often ride my Vespa scooter to class at the U of M from Hopkins Crossroad – even in the winter if the roads were dry.

We were married June 12, 1965 - before I finished my degree at the U and entered the Navy.

When our girls were 2 and 3, we bought a new 1970 VW Fastback in Germany and Joanne and the girls traveled throughout Europe following me on the USS Independence (CVA-62) for over 6 months.

When we were stationed at China Lake, CA, Joanne would visit the base package store on Thursdays. The manager’s cousin worked for Fish and Game and knew where they were stocking trout. We fished the mountain streams most weekends with the info. she gathered.

The last photo I took of Joanne alive was her holding her newborn grandson.
