William Oliver “Bill” Twet
William Oliver Twet “Bill” was born February 17, 1944 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Arnold Oliver and Alva Wilhemina (Holmlund)Twet. He died early Tuesday morning, December 8, 2009 at Providence Place in South Minneapolis where he made his home for over 5 years. He was 65 years, 9 months and 21 days. Bill spent his early years growing up in Green Bay with his mother and spending time in Milwaukee with his father. Bill and his mother moved to Hopkins, Minnesota where he graduated from high school. He attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1967. Bill enlisted in the US Army Reserve in 1968 and retired in 2004 obtaining the rank of major. He briefly worked for the Minnesota Vikings as a writer doing media guides. He became a bouncer at different establishments in St. Louis Park and also became involved in refereeing and umpiring amateur sports in the Twin City area. He has been an avid Green Bay Packer football fan, following the team since the early 50’s. His dream was to write a book, which he titled, “Two More Roads to Ride” about Gene Ronzani, during his final days as the head coach for the Packers. Bill did many interviews in person and over the phone with NFL players from that era. He was also known as “the author.” He also has been involved in collecting sports cards and memorabilia over the years. His death comes as a shock to all who knew him. He had over come some trying times in his life, especially the death of his mother in 1993 and this fall he started refereeing basketball games again and was enthused about getting back in shape. We will all miss his varied hair styles, colorful clothes he wore and his story telling ability. Bill is survived by the staff and friends at Providence Place, as well as the officiating community and the sports collectors community in the Twin Cities. There will be a memorial gathering Sunday (12-13-09) 4:00 PM at Providence Place for the staff and friends there. There will be another memorial gathering Sunday (12-13-09) at 5:00 PM at Albin Chapel, 6855 Rowland Road, Eden Prairie, Minnesota 55344,www.albinchapel.com Interment will be Monday (12-14-09) 10:00 AM at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Bloomington, Minnesota.
